A Sea of Salty Water
By Katrina Stylianou
Textured fabric and denim scraps with salt water crystals in different colours growing all over the dress, along with a crochet headpiece.
This gown is comprised of patchwork rectangles, placed at random but also in the form of a gradient. This gradient simulates the ocean as it is always moving and changing, it also creates a pattern, from the blue depths of the seafloor to the grey hue that is only seen when there is a storm, to the crashing white waves. This dress is also accompanied by a crochet cap that gives off the effect of seaweed, washed ashore after the ferocity of the storm.
I have always been inspired by the ocean, so I created a dress that emulates it, specifically its state when there is a coming storm. The dress involves shades of blue, grey, and white, and the element of using salt crystals as embellishment is a literal representation of the fact that seawater is very salty. The matching headpiece depicts seaweed, as it is washed ashore in the aftermath of the storm.
