All Eyes On You
By Elizabeth Clerke (Pouffe Galore)
This soft sculpture pouffe is constructed from foam and wood, adorned with reclaimed textiles – t-shirts and a doona. Bulbous shapes, made from reclaimed textiles and stuffed with discarded doona fill, each feature sewn-on eyes. Playful yet pointed, the piece explores themes of visibility and self-presentation. The eyes symbolise societal scrutiny, particularly in the context of fashion trends and the pressure to stay 'in.' This preoccupation often highlights the issue of over-abundance and the impact of discarded fashion on our planet. The pudgy shapes themselves critique this over-abundance, adding a layer of commentary on consumerism. This juxtaposition of conforming to trends and surveillance invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences with being seen and judged, while also being entertained by the piece's quirky charm.
My initial foray into fashion design was driven by a desire to create pieces that made people look twice. This early fascination with how we dress to impress is the genesis of 'All Eyes On You.' This soft sculpture, covered in pudgy, bulbous shapes with sewn-on eyes, represents a mix of emotions: red for anger, green for envy, and more. Whether chasing compliments or dodging side-eyes, the feeling is familiar: are you being adored, judged, or quietly watched? The eyes symbolise societal scrutiny, especially in fashion, where staying on trend can lead to the wastefulness of over-abundance. The pudgy shapes critique this over-abundance, adding a playful yet pointed commentary on consumerism. Like much of my work, this piece is quirky and plays with humour and irreverence, presented on my chosen canvas: a pouffe. I aim to intrigue and entertain viewers, encouraging them to reflect on these themes with a smile.
