Loom Lounge
By Carl Broesen
Loom Lounge is a three-seater lounge that investigates the potential of textile waste as a viable upholstery material. Drawing inspiration from rag-rug weaving traditions, the lounge employs a hybrid construction method, transforming small offcuts of natural and synthetic textiles into woven surfaces that offer both tactility and structural depth. These offcuts—typically destined for landfill—are interlaced through a woven wire mesh supported by a steel frame, creating a surface that is both visually rich and materially intentional.
The tubular frame, fabricated from mild steel and finished in electroplated nickel, references industrial manufacturing techniques while incorporating reclaimed offcuts from the Australian furniture industry. The steel mesh acts as both support and loom, establishing a direct relationship between traditional handcraft and mass production—merging weaving techniques with industrial materials in a single, expressive form.
This work challenges conventional approaches to upholstery and comfort in furniture design. Rather than concealing structure beneath layers of filler and textile, Loom Lounge exposes and celebrates the making process, inviting users to engage with its materiality. It reflects Carl’s ongoing interest in circular thinking and how design can provoke thoughtful dialogue around waste, utility, and beauty.
